In the heart of Tsavo, where the relentless dry season makes life a constant struggle for all its inhabitants, there exists a heartwarming tale of survival against the odds.
Kamili, an orphaned elephant, found herself in a difficult situation, but a stroke of good fortune would change her fate forever. This is the remarkable story of how a timely discovery led to Kamili’s rescue and survival.
It was October 3rd, 2021, when we received alarming news of a young calf in distress near Satao, within Tsavo East National Park.
Fortunately, Trevor, our vigilant field manager, was in the vicinity, inspecting the area’s water sources for wildlife.
With urgency in the air, the Voi Keepers swiftly gathered supplies, and Trevor raced to Satao to aid Kamili.
During his journey, Trevor came across another juvenile elephant in dire straits. This young elephant was too weak to move more than a few unsteady steps.
It became evident that this was a different elephant from the one initially reported, as the first calf was unresponsive, while this one fought to remain on its feet, expending every ounce of energy in the process.
Suddenly, our team faced the challenge of caring for not one but two orphaned elephants. Time was of the essence, prompting us to rally additional support from our Kaluku Field HQ. A rescue plane was swiftly dispatched to Satao.
Regrettably, the first elephant was beyond saving and succumbed to its condition. However, we were determined to give the second calf every chance to survive.
Upon arrival at the scene, our team administered vital fluids to the calf and provided shade. The rescue plane hurried back to base as the sun dipped below the horizon.
The calf was airlifted to the Nairobi Nursery, where our dedicated Keepers welcomed it with open arms, offering fresh water, supplements, greens, and the essential drips it required.
Kamili’s life hung in the balance, and quick and decisive action saved her. Every passing hour can be the difference between life and death in drought-stricken regions.
Kamili may have arrived at the Nursery, but her journey to recovery was far from over. It took several weeks of unwavering care to nurse her back to health.
Although she remains slender, her cheeks and belly are gradually filling out, and her vibrant spirit is making a heartening return. Kamili is an enchanting elephant whose expressive eyes vividly convey her emotions.
The circumstances leading to Kamili’s orphanhood are shrouded in mystery. Her herd likely had to abandon her when she could no longer keep pace with them.
But Kamili will never face abandonment again. She tends to be cautious, waiting for others to approach her first.
Thankfully, the other elephants in our Nursery herd are friendly and have eagerly extended their friendship to Kamili. Kindani and Kinyei have been incredibly welcoming.
While the loss of another Satao orphan is a cause for sadness, there is a silver lining: had it not been for Trevor’s fortunate encounter with Kamili, she would not be thriving today.
